The monastery was established in September 1897, by
Sri. Khijari Babu, a
resident of Bangladesh & also a successful businessman of Calcutta.
The Mayanmar Buddhist Monastery Kushinagar was the First International
monastery in the holy land, the Buddha's nirvana place, for monks and a
Buddhist practice center for lay people.
In 1891-92 when
Mahavir Bhikshu saw the nirvana statue of Lord Buddha. He along with
Khijari Babu with a sacred dream of making the temple reached
Kushinagar and confirmed
the existence of the Nirvana statue.
Afterwards in 1897 when Khijari Babu came with all his wealth to
Kushinagar to buy the property in
Kushinagar, he was looted at
Sirasia Pul on Deoria Kushinagar way.
But anyhow the funds were rearranged and 6 Acers land was purchased. The
main temple was reconstructed and the Burmese monastery
was formed with the construction of Burmese temple in 1898
for the
devotees of Buddha.
In 1897, Mahavir Bikshu introduced Bikshu Chandramani a Burmese Monk who
originally belonged to Ghamar Village of Gajipur District
as a person
Incharge for the Burmese Monastery. When the temple was made Bhikshu
Chandramani made his earnest efforts to project Kushinagar as the Niravana
Site of Lord Buddha. His ultimate aim was to bring the traffic from Asian
Countries and to Focus Kushinagar
on the world Map by spreading Buddhism.
Bikshu Chandramani was a great physician too. He used to cure the serious
diseases by simple leaves brought from the forest. In 1919 he organized a
Ramlila to attract the Local people. In 1926 Matha Kuar temple was
reformed by the followers of Bhikshus.
Sooner his ideas worked & he started a free education primary school
in the year 1929. In 1934 the school was registered as High School &
in 1954 it was transformed into a degree college cherished as Buddha Post
Graduate Degree College. In the mean time Monastery spreaded its wing in
Sarnath, Sigra and BodhGaya.
In
1972 when Bhikshu Chandamani died a major set back was felt again for
development of Kushinagar. But his follower Sant Gyaneshwar took the
charge and never looked back.
Sant
Gyaneshwar
Born in 1936 at Aakayam
District of Burma, he left his village in 1950 after his basic education.
He then went to Rangoon and became Dharamacharaya and joined as a teacher
at Margalarama University. Sri Janki Babu , Dharamrakshit Achutayanand who
was known to Baba Gyanashewar made him aware about the Kushinagar and
requested him to join as a monk in Burmese Monastery
because the monastery responsibilities were increasing
day by day and the health of Chandrmani Bikshu was getting poor .
Sant Gyanashwar came to India to help and serve the monastery . Chanadmani
Bikshu motivated Sant Gyaneshwar to attain more knowledge.
Sant Gyaneshwar completed his
High School Examinations in 1968, Intermediate
Examinations in 1970 and finished his graduation in 1973, along
with partial charge of the monastery.
After the death of Chandramani Bhikshu in 1972 the monastery was
given in joint charge to Sant Gyaneshwar and Bhikshu Ukettima . While
administrating the Monastery Sant Gyaneshwar continued his studies and
finished up his Post Graduation in 1975 and did his LLB in 1980.
After the death of Bhikshu
Ukettima in 1987 the whole responsibilities came on to the shoulders of Sant
Gyaneshwar which is being performed in very well way.
The Association has got
major
antiques as China temple, Rambhar Stupa & Tibbetan Temple in its
